Afghan Rulers Used Left-Behind UK Technology to Locate Afghans That Served With Western Forces, Inquiry Hears

A confidential source has told the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK abandoned classified devices permitting the militant group to identify local individuals that had served with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands in Danger

Person A, called Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the data leak were told to move homes and change their contact details to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

Members of Parliament are looking into official response of a massive disclosure of personal details affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to relocate to Britain to escape militant rule.

The Information Breach Occurred

An electronic document with private information, such as names, phone numbers and occasionally family information, was mistakenly released by an official employed at British military command in early 2022.

The leak was discovered months later, when details of several individuals who had sought to relocate to Britain were posted on Facebook.

Militant Technology

“There seems to be this misconception that the Taliban are without comparable resources that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain mobile details, they are able to track your precise location. That's precisely what the unit did.”

When questioned about whether the Taliban owned sophisticated technology, the source declared: “They've got everything.”

Impact of the Information Leak

Early investigations presented to the inquiry suggested that approximately fifty relatives and associates of Afghans affected by the breach had been murdered.

A legal restriction about the breach was implemented in last year and restricted all details regarding the matter from public disclosure until recently.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, Person A and the non-governmental organization associated with informed Afghan families they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate if they could and altered their phone numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if the Taliban had access to this information, would lead to their location being found,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

The whistleblower contested that government assessment carried out by a retired civil servant had been wrong to determine that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.

“The thing to remember is that these individuals are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

She detailed horrific violence experienced by at-risk Afghans, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to force relatives to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
