Battlefield 6's Relaxed Game Mode Sparks Heated Debates Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh game mode called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option resembles the standard Breakthrough setup but includes several key adjustments:
- Each team has only eight real players, with the remaining made up of 32 bots.
- Actions done by real players grant full XP, while bot actions offer reduced XP.
- Only two maps are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Features like Dogtags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.
In short, the playlist lives up to its title: it's a casual take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, since it provides more options for players looking for different methods to have fun with the game. However, gaming history have taught us anything, it's that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, a lot of Battlefield 6 players are upset.
Community Reactions: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer real players. Don't repeat the mistakes of your rivals," states one reply to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking concept," says a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, a player remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," while another lists everything they believe to be problematic in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."
However, amid the criticism, there are players explaining how much they're liking the new mode. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this title all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," states a different comment. A response on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and someone else applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Criticisms and Community Input
All that said, there are constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it will make queue times more extended for other modes because of the sheer number of options in the game already. Similarly, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode won't start without a required amount of human gamers, despite it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide full XP, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the system. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the community compromising halfway, as per a Reddit comment. Another describes this mode as the developers "dropping the ball so hard, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Will Changes Be Made?
Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything so far with the latest installment, it is that they're paying attention and acting on player input. Tasks being too difficult got fixed rapidly, just like the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics indicates this recent mode isn't performing to their standards, they will not hesitate to change it again.
