Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

An new term surfaced a couple of months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to care for a minor who has lost their entire family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are ongoing. Authorities rejects these allegations, just as it disavows all charges it is charged with. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, apparently, is what unity resembles.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Profound Human Cost

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on peace has transformed into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
