Fury Erupts as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Backlash

Personalities from both sides of the political divide and the entertainment industry are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Social Media Post

After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Arrest

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

“What a vile and vile comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

A number of Republican elected officials also voiced disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his political party to justify the statements.

Reiner's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of a different individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
