Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities shared video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
