Weather experts are reporting a frosty commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are expected to proceed, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so extra layers will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with no rain and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, making warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on trains and buses.

The Mercury Set to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this indicated the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
