Ollie Pope Strengthens Claim to England's Number Three Slot with Bold 90 Versus Lions

It is tough to know how significant of the English team's preparatory match will be remotely important when their Ashes contest starts 10km away at the Perth venue on the coming Friday – a short span in space or time but light years away in import and mood – but if it managed solely enhancing Pope's confidence, that by itself has rendered the endeavor beneficial.

The English side's No 3 – this fact is undoubtedly completely established – followed his first-innings century by adding another 90 in the second, and what was remarkable was not merely the quantity of scored runs but the way in which they were accumulated. On occasion the player appeared commanding, striking a twelve fours and a pair of maximums, hitting the ball sweetly but with devilish determination.

This was just a practice match versus a England Lions team that deployed exactly 11 pitchers across a contest staged in front of a small group of people in a public park, but it was nevertheless hugely praiseworthy. Officially, England, chasing of 202 once the Lions closed their second innings on 251 for six, succeeded by five wickets in hand after Jamie Smith raced the team over the winning target with a flurry of fours and sixes.

Joe Root clocked up another 31 runs but was less than convincing during England's warm-up.

Crawley and Duckett, the other two major first-innings performers, both failed in the second innings, while Root scored further runs – 31 on this occasion – but was not significantly more convincing, before being bemused and accordingly out by Will Jacks. Brook suffered an identical outcome a little later.

Shoaib Bashir – who finished the game having bowled 12 bowling spells for either team – will have encountered a portion of the batting he bowled to pretty hostile. His initial six overs against the Lions cost 56, with McKinney tucking in to deliveries that if not exactly loose was certainly not overly threatening.

At the end the sixth spell of that period, the English side's other pitchers had conceded nearly exactly the same total of runs – 57 – from 15, though Bashir grew a somewhat less generous in time, giving up 27 from his last six. He secured one wicket, taking a smart, low-down grab, leaning to his right, to conclude Jacob Bethell's batting stint for 70, off 80 deliveries.

Jacob Bethell, making up for achieving only a small score in the opening knock, was among three players with fifties in the Lions' top four. McKinney's scores from opening batsman were more reliable than the scores of their number three: he notched 66 in their first batting effort and scored 68 in their follow-up, using 61 deliveries to reach his half-century, with five boundaries and two sixes, each from Bashir's deliveries. Bethell made 68 then a mishit to Stokes at cover position, who made a bending catch at ankle height.

Jordan Cox showed comparable steadiness, and followed his first-innings 53 with a further 57, at just over a run per delivery. There were a few remarkably handsome hits en route, featuring a straight hit and a pull shot against successive Brydon Carse deliveries to reach his 50 runs.

Having missed the opening day of this match with a illness and contributed only the least significant of inputs to the follow-up, Brydon Carse bowled excellently when at last given the chance, with McKinney and Jordan Cox included in his three wickets.
