Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you become starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
