The pre-Ashes verbal sparring continues to heat up, with former England bowler Broad declaring that England will confront "probably the worst Australian team in over a decade" on tour this winter.

Warner's Bold Prediction Answered by Doubt

The former England bowler's claim was in response to David Warner – an Ashes foe of Broad’s – forecasting a 4-0 victory for the hosts. "If the captain [Pat Cummins] doesn’t play, they might win one game," Warner commented.

Australia have not lost a Ashes match on home soil since England’s series win in the 2010-11 tour. Their 5-0 win three years later – on the back of seven losses in their last nine matches – was followed by 4-0 series victories in the 2017-18 and 2021-22 campaigns.

Team Uncertainty and Fitness Concerns for Australia

However, the top-ranked Test team, who have lost only one of their past 13 bilateral series, approach the forthcoming contest with uncertainty over the makeup of their top order and the fitness of Pat Cummins, who is unlikely to feature in the opening match at Perth because of a back issue.

"It's extremely challenging to triumph on Australian soil as an England side, or any visiting team," Broad remarked on his podcast. "The Australians are massive favourites."

"The Aussies face the greatest expectations because they’re anticipated to prevail, they’re brilliant at home, but they’ve got question marks over their team and concerns over their captain’s fitness. You wouldn’t be outlandish in thinking – it’s actually not an opinion, it’s a fact – it is likely the worst Australian team since 2010. And it’s the best English team in over a decade. These factors point towards the fact that it’s going to be a thrilling contest."

Comparison to Historic Tour

"Australia have been so consistent for a long period of time that it was clear who was going to open the batting, who was going to bat, what bowlers there were, and they don’t have that. It’s very much a comparable scenario to the 2010-11 period when England traveled and emerged victorious. The reality is Australia generally have to be bad to lose in Australia and England have to be very good. The English have a solid opportunity of performing exceptionally and Australia have a decent chance of underperforming."

Team Dilemma for England

A key question for England remains their choice at No 3, with Pope and Bethell contesting the spot. Alastair Cook, whose prolific scoring set up the tourists’ series win 15 years ago, believes it would be "strange" for Stokes' team to abandon Pope, who has been a regular at number three for the last three years.

"I would bat Ollie Pope at three," said Cook. "In my view it’s quite an easy decision. They have a player who has been part of this buildup for three or four years. He has led the team, he’s played some extraordinary innings for the national side and he scores centuries. He knows how to score hundreds in first-class cricket. If they drop him now, I think that alters the entire balance of what they’ve built up over the last few years."

Although praising Bethell as "an incredibly talented player", Cook added: "It would be a big, big gamble [to pick him] because should it fail where do you move back to, a player you recently discarded? They have committed heavily in people like Ollie Pope and [Crawley that it would seem highly odd to change it now."

Leadership Shift and Broadcast Crew

Pope has been replaced by Harry Brook as the team's deputy skipper but, according to Cook, that will "take the pressure off" the Surrey right-hander.

"They’ve been proactive on that, considering in case of an injury to Stokes, they’ve got a guy in Harry Brook who has taken the [captaincy of the] one-day side and everyone has seen that he appears a natural fit. This will take the pressure off. I don’t think weaken his position. Certainly it will have disappointed him because whenever you're removed from a leadership role it wouldn’t be ideal, but I doubt it undermines him."

Cook will be in the host nation as part of the broadcast team of the series, and will be accompanied by former Ashes champions Finn and Graeme Swann as on-the-ground pundits. The network will provide its own audio feed but will use a mixed approach, with commentators Alastair Eykyn and Rob Hatch to work off-site in the UK, while Cook, Finn and Swann provide co-commentary from on location. Ebony Rainford-Brent is also part of the commentary team working off-site, with the on-ground coverage to be hosted by Ives.
