Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

This news arrives shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
