The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.
