The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
