The Showrunner Reveals He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Does the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the writers are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“There are some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
