Two Separate Cuba-Headed Relief Sailboats Reported Missing subsequent to Departing the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery effort is presently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for two missing sailing vessels loaded with relief goods traveling from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Maritime Search Operations Deployed
Mexico has deployed navy personnel and search planes to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine personnel, per a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to arrive in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.
Background of Relief to the Nation
The island nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the country grapples with widespread national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and the two ships are outfitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative associated with the mission commented.
The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their consular staff.
"The group is working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.
Earlier Aid Shipment
Just days before, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had carried a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, carried photovoltaic panels, drugs, formula milk, cycles and provisions.
Larger Political Climate
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded attempts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.
Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50,000 operations called off in Cuba amid energy rationing.
Political measures have intensified over the past months, with statements from several officials highlighting the complicated situation regarding diplomatic ties.
Reacting to previous statements, a senior Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that early stages of talks were initiated, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The naval forces said it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the sailboats and ensure the security of the people on board.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
