Van Dijk Admits Squad is in a Mess, Questions Players on Responsibility
Virgil van Dijk has delivered a scathing evaluation of the club's woeful title defence, admitting the title holders are in a mess and letting down head coach Slot while doubting whether all squad members is owning up for the current downturn.
Van Dijk struggled to hold back his frustration after the weekend's 3-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest, a result that saw the Reds in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. “Unacceptable” Start and Set-Piece Woes
The captain labeled Liverpool’s start to the second half as “not good enough” and admitted “anxiety set in” as soon as the Forest player gave Sean Dyche’s team the advantage. The first goal was the ninth concession Liverpool have allowed from dead-ball situations in the Premier League this season.
“We had a great three or four days’ preparation but in a fixture you are facing reality and the facts are we gave away a free-kick in the first half and a terrible goal at the start of the second half,” stated Van Dijk. “We are definitely failing the manager, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. Start with self-reflection and then you help each other, you work together to escape of this mess because at the present time it is a difficult situation – that’s just a fact.
Captain’s Challenge: Step Up
Van Dijk typically addresses the media after a game as part of his duties as team leader. This time was distinct, however. He spoke was more forceful – so loud that any player in the stadium corridors could hear him – and he shook with anger while urging the dressing room to respond. “Anger is justified,” he insisted. “The main thing for me is that everyone has to take responsibility.” Asked whether this is occurring, Van Dijk answered: “It's unclear. But it's essential. That's crucial I want the players to do. It's challenging during difficult times but we must act if we aim to recover of this.”
Squad Investment and Broader Issues
The Merseyside club invested almost £450 million to replenish a title-winning squad in the off-season but have regressed, with several high-profile signings struggling to contribute so far. The captain maintained that Liverpool’s problems go beyond the new recruits. “It's difficult for everyone,” he said. “My expectation is for each player to be answerable on the pitch. This is necessary in order to motivate one another, to improve collectively. When someone is pressing, you must join the press. These are fundamentals but it’s not happening enough.”
Appeal to Stick Together
Van Dijk continued: “In the current term we lack any steady form, we allow excessive scores, we are losing battles and all share the blame for it and I hope everyone sees that. It's vital to take responsibility to turn this around and it is easy to assign blame but unity is essential. Past successes were collective and claimed the title and all contributed, and during a challenging phase you must remain united and avoid blaming others.
“You have to be a man and face the toughness and persist, repeatedly because if you want to give up then you are in the wrong environment in my view, because Liverpool has been going through many adversity over recent seasons and we’ve always come out of it. But it doesn’t mean it is straightforward, it’s exhausting but there is no other way.”
Looking Ahead
Next up in the Premier League is a visit to London Stadium next Sunday, after the Champions League fixture of PSV in the European competition. Van Dijk said: “The next game is another opportunity so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? Certainly not, I’m going to go home and analyze how we can turn this around and hopefully that is the collective focus as well.”
