Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a key European tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Manchester.
